Lighting
has gone state of the art for hydroponics. The plant lighting for hydroponics
can now cater to flowering or vegetative growth. Two things need to
be considered when setting up a lighting system: output and spectrum.
Output relates to the intensity of the light. An indoor garden needs
about two thousand lumens per square foot for adequate growth. This
may sound like a lot but today’s bulb can handle this easily.
Spectrum is the color or wave of the light. Red or orange light is for
budding and flowering. Blue light is for vegetative growth. When using
“grow” bulbs may have to be changed for the appropriate
stage of growth or two different kinds of light can be used at once.
Fluorescent systems are affordable but have their drawbacks. Either
both colors must be used or a change in colors will have to occur. The
main problem is fluorescent light only has the appropriate intensity
when it is a few inches away, meaning the light will have to be raised
as the plant grows. The other option is HID or high intensity discharge
plant lighting for hydroponics. This system is expensive but provides
the best lighting. The lights are mixed spectrum but they do run hot.
They can also put a strain on the power bill.
Remember plant lighting for hydroponics can be controlled by timers.
With all the advances in the systems it’s easy to grow big, hardy
plants. Deciding which is best will depend on the space and finances
available.
