One
of the benefits of hydroponics is dealing with fewer pests. Insects
use soil for access to plants, without soil it is much more difficult
for them to make their way to the plant. This being true occasionally
a pest of hydroponics can be found.
Much of the pest control involves picking the little critters off by
hand. This may hard for the squeamish, but is a great way to avoid chemical
use. Certain insects will cause the need for isolation of the plant,
a washing in warm water, and then a spray with insecticidal soap. Some
pests will only need a little natural insecticide, like the kind that
use kelp extracts and are biodegradable.
Some of the common pests seen are Aphids, Cockroaches, Earwigs, Leaf
hoppers, and Mealy bugs. These bugs you will have to pick off or scrape
off then wash the plant and spray with insecticidal soap. Most every
caterpillar is considered a pest and will eat leaves some common ones
you will see: European Corn Borers, Imported Cabbage Worms, and Cutworms
(not common in hydroponics.) Beetles are also very common and need to
be picked off as well. Beetles like Mexican Bean Beetles and Colorado
Potato Beetles will leave larvae that eat the whole plant.
