Hydroponic Lettuce

Hydroponic LettuceOne of the largest crops grown without soil is hydroponic lettuce. Lettuce has been notoriously nutrient free, more a filler than a food, consisting mostly of water. Since it is mostly water, lettuce was one of the first plants to be grown on a large scale using hydroponic techniques.

Hydroponic lettuce grows much larger and faster than it’s in soil counterpart. One big advantage over soil grown lettuce, other than larger yields, is that hydroponically grown lettuce is free from contaminants that prematurely rot the leaves, and often contained in a way that makes it inaccessible to other animals that might eat it.

Hydroponic lettuce is preferred by up-scale restaurants because it has never been exposed to dirt. Although the process is organic, because no soil is used it is often not sold with an organic label, but it may actually be healthier than its organic counterpart. Other large scale hydroponically grown plants are tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.
