Metal halide lights emit light in the blue spectrum, while high pressure sodium emits light more in the red spectrum, closer to natural sunlight. Both spectrums are important for plant growth. Hydroponic LED grow lights can use a combination of red and blue LED lights in one unit so both spectrums can be emitted simultaneously. Another advantage hydroponic LED grow lights have is that since they
are using much less energy than metal halide and high pressure sodium
lights they don’t produce as much heat. This is important because
if the lights get too hot, they can prematurely dry out a plant, or burn
it. Expensive cooling units and fans are not needed nearly as much with
LED lights, and the lights can be positioned closer to the plants, which
increases their efficiency. LED lights are slowly replacing tradition
lights because of the cost that is saved. |
