Other unlikely places for growing plants are in basements or underground farms that use a combination of hydroponic gardening systems and electric lights. These gardens are found in areas that receive very little sunlight such as the highest and lowest latitudes on earth, where winter sunlight is almost nonexistent. With the addition of lights plants can be grown all winter long in the harshest environments. Another reason people grow underground or indoors is because of the legality of their crop. One of the largest hydroponically grown crops is marijuana, which is illegal in the United States, the largest consumer of marijuana. Because the plant cannot be grown outdoors, but is still desirable, many farmers grow their crops indoors with additional lights. The first successful hydroponic gardening system was introduced to Wake
Island in the 1930’s. The island was a rest and refueling stop for
Pan American Airline’s pacific flights, but has no fresh water and
almost no soil at all. Because there was no soil, hydroponics were used
to grow vegetable used to feed the passengers and crew of the flights.
Since the water is re-circulated in hydroponic gardening systems less
is needed making it ideal for that environment. That farm was successful
until World War Two when Japan invaded the island and massacred the population.
